Don't ever remove more than one-third of the total canopy any one year. Nor should you start pruning a yew shrub by removing an entire section of its foliage. Instead, when you are pruning yew bushes, snip a little on all sides of each yew to keep it natural looking and healthy.

Is it OK to trim yews in the fall?

Start pruning yews in late March or early April. If the yews are growing vigorously, you may need to prune them again in late June. Avoid pruning yews in the fall, as this will make them more vulnerable to winter weather.

How do you rejuvenate a yew?

Prune them in early spring, apply a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, and water them through the summer. It may take a few years, but the yews will revive — so vigorously that only annual pruning will hold them in check.

Can a brown yew come back?

When yews turn brown, their site and recent history should be reviewed to determine a cause. Yews affected by salts or winter damage may recover over time, and it is wise to not prune out the brown tissue immediately in case the branch tips are still viable.

When should you not trim yews?

As a general rule, heavy pruning should not be done after August 15. The reason for this is that trimming stimulates new growth which may not have sufficient time to harden off before the onset of frost and cold weather in the fall.

How far back can you cut a yew hedge?

If your yew hedge has become too large, it is best to prune it gradually over three years in mid-spring: In the first year, cut the top back to at least 15cm (6in) lower than the final desired height. This will help to recreate a dense, even surface. The following year, reduce the width of one of the sides.

Can I trim yews in September?

These evergreens are normally pruned twice a year, once in early July and again in early September. As much as 2/3 of the new growth can be removed to shape this plant at the July pruning. The fall pruning should be just a light touch up to even out secondary growth.

Can I cut back yew in November?

Joyously, you can prune yew hedge plants whenever you feel like it except in freezing weather. In the early years, the more often you clip the side branches, the bushier your yew hedge will become.

What time of year is best to trim yews?

The most ideal time to cut a yew hedge is in early spring, around about March. It will then start shooting again in April. You can easily cut yews right back, down to the old wood — they can tolerate that.

What is the lifespan of a yew?

Yew may be able to live for 3,000 years although 1,500 may be more frequent. All yew will be ancient from 900 years onward (early and pre Norman), although many will have ancient characteristics from around 500 years. Ageing of yew trees is very difficult.

Will my yew recover?

Yew is very tough and is able to recover even when it appears dead.

Can I trim yews in August?

Yews, junipers, and arborvitae go into a semi-dormant phase in mid summer. Once the new spring growth has hardened off, turned the same dark green as the rest of the plant, you can do some pruning. This is the perfect time to clip back wayward branches and overgrown shoots by two thirds.

Can you trim yew in summer?

As the years pass and your Yew hedge becomes more established, you can maintain the plant by trimming during the summer right up until September. If you delay Yew hedge pruning beyond this time, you may risk your plant developing bare patches, so it is preferable to undertake the task as soon as possible.

How do I fix my leggy yew?

Chop the entire yew to within 6 to 12 inches of the ground if it is leggy with numerous patches that don't have foliage or lost its natural, rounded, pyramid shape to poor pruning. When new growth starts to emerge in late spring to early summer, cut stubs back to 1/4 inch above where new growth begins to emerge.

Do yews need a lot of water?

Yews require minimal watering. During drought conditions, weekly watering is recommended. Adding a layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help to retain moisture in the soil.

Do yews grow on old wood?

Yews (Taxus) generate new growth from old wood, so you can prune them aggressively with good results, providing you are patient.

How far back can you trim evergreen shrubs?

New growth can be sheared back or thinned close to the dead zone, but you should try not to remove any more than two thirds of new growth.

Will a hedge grow back if cut it right back?

The top part of the hedge can be cut off, taking as much as is desired away, or even cutting the hedge down to near ground level. An established hedge quickly re-establishes when cut back hard, but it is really a waste of its height and it takes extra time to re-grow, so hedges are usually only cut back part-way.

Can you cut a hedge back too much?

Trimming hedges can be a tranquil and relaxing task. One that we enjoy in warmer weather and that keeps out hedges healthy and strong. However, it is possible for you to trim your hedge too much, and when this happens you run the risk of killing your hedge or causing permanent damage.

Can you cut hedges back to base and it regrow?

Remove up to one-third of the thickest stems down at the base of the plant, stimulating new growth; repeat the next year, and the year after. This will leave you with a healthier shrub that's reduced in size.
